The Express Music Theory Program

Our Express Theory Program is a unique, intensive course designed to cover an entire AMEB Music Theory grade in just one week.

This program gives students the focus and support to rapidly master the content they need to complete the examination.

By the end of the program, most students are ready to sit their AMEB theory examination with confidence, with other students taking the examination shortly after with some additional support.

Music Theory Programs that cover examination material are intensive programs, designed to cover all exam material for the corresponding grade.

Music theory is the foundation of every great musician. It gives students the tools to:

  • Understand the music they play
  • Improve sight-reading and aural skills
  • Develop composition and improvisation
  • Support their AMEB practical exams with required theory grades.

If we were to learn any language, being able to speak the language is one aspect, but being able to read, write and understand the language is another. As music is a language in itself, learning music theory helps us to understand the mechanics of this language. It helps us to be able to read the music we play, and to communicate it effectively in the way we play it.

Basic Music Theory is always incorporated into our music lessons. Students can choose to have a separate private lesson for Music Theory when the content becomes more difficult. This is especially for students that are preparing for their practical music examinations, as Music Theory becomes a prerequisite for certain grades.

Music Examination Boards such as the AMEB or ABRSM also offer examinations in Music Theory. When reaching a certain practical grade on your instrument, please note that passing a music theory examination becomes a prerequisite for completing the grade.

Our Express Theory Program will be preparing students for the AMEB Examinations.

Private lessons may be arranged for Music Theory exams for other examination boards.

The program is for:

  • Students preparing for AMEB practical exams who need to complete music theory requirements

  • Students who want to fast-track their theory knowledge and completion of exams

  • Learners who enjoy focused, structured study in a small group setting

In most cases, yes. Many of our students go on to complete their AMEB theory exams successfully right after the program, often with excellent results. Readiness is determined by both student commitment during the course and teacher recommendation.

As the content is more difficult in higher grades, additional support may be needed before completing the examination.

We understand that every student is different. While the Express Program is intensive, our teachers provide support throughout and adapt pacing where possible.

Private Music Theory lessons are another option for students who wish to pace their studies for Music Theory.

We currently offer AMEB Theory courses from Grade 1 through to Grade 4, depending on demand.

Higher levels may be arranged upon request.
