The Piano Express Pathway

The Piano Express Program at Cantabile School of Music is a structured and engaging pathway that helps students progress confidently from their very first lesson to more advanced musical skills. Each level builds on the one before it, ensuring that students develop a strong foundation in rhythm, reading, technique, musical understanding and playing.

Level 1 – Green Level

Students at The Piano Express begin their musical journey from the very first lesson. In this foundational level, the focus is on developing a steady beat, exploring the keyboard’s layout, learning the letter names of the white keys, and mastering finger numbers. Within just a few weeks, students are already playing a range of songs, building coordination, awareness, and the joy of making music.

Level 2 – Purple Level

After establishing musical confidence in Level 1, students begin their introduction to traditional note reading. In this level, they learn to recognise and play notes on the Grand Staff while reinforcing their understanding of rhythm and finger placement. The repertoire is intentionally simple, allowing students to focus on fluency and comprehension as they take their first steps into reading music.

Level 3 – Orange Level

With the basics of note reading in place, students now expand their coordination and musical expression through hands-together playing. This level introduces chordal work, parallel and contrary motion, and more dynamic phrasing. By combining both hands, students begin to understand how melody and harmony interact, deepening their musical sensitivity and technical control.

Level 4 – Blue Level

Level 4 introduces new rhythmic patterns, hand positions, and finger sequences, encouraging greater dexterity and independence between the hands. Students encounter familiar and classical tunes that strengthen sight-reading and pattern recognition while broadening their stylistic awareness. The aim is to help students play with accuracy, confidence, and musical shape.

Level 5 – Silver Level

At this stage, students begin exploring full octave melodies and scales, linking these concepts directly to their repertoire. Rather than treating scales as isolated exercises, students see how they naturally appear within songs. Primary chords are introduced in context, giving students a deeper understanding of harmonic structure and helping them play with a more refined, connected sound.

Level 6 – Gold Level

Students now apply their knowledge of chords and scales to more sophisticated accompaniment styles such as broken chords, waltz patterns, and Alberti bass. This level develops a sense of musical texture and phrasing, helping students play with greater expression and artistry. By the end of the Gold Level, many students are ready to transition confidently into intermediate repertoire or further explore formal examination pathways such as the AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board).

Beyond Gold Level

Reaching the Gold Level is a significant achievement. At this stage, students have developed confident reading, rhythm, and performance skills, and are ready to take their music further. They have learnt to build a strong foundation in learning the piano.

After completing Piano Express, students can continue their learning in a number of ways:

Early-Intermediate Level 1For students who have completed the Gold Level and are eager to keep progressing within Piano Express. This level deepens musical understanding, strengthens technique, and encourages expressive performance. It leads naturally to Early-Intermediate Level 2 or other advanced learning pathways at Cantabile.

Private Piano Lessons – ideal for students who are ready to explore advanced pieces, expressive techniques, and personalised goals.

AMEB or Other Graded Exams – for those who would like to set structured performance goals with guidance from our experienced teachers.
