AMEB Information Session

A big thank you to everyone who participated in our AMEB Information Session and first Teachers’ Performance for the year on 14th April 2018.

The concert successfully featured short performances by Cantabile’s very own music teachers and it was a great time where the students got to watch their teachers perform. The sessions were also followed by a yummy BBQ lunch – thanks to everyone who helped out!

Don’t worry if you could not make it this time around, as there are many more similar events coming up in the near future. Do keep a look out for these dates on our social media and newsletters so you don’t miss out.

We look forward to seeing you at our next event!

REGISTRATIONS ARE STILL OPEN FOR OUR STRING PROGRAM!

The Cantabile String Program is a great introduction to learning one of four stringed instruments in a fun and exciting way!

If you missed out on attending our String Program Orientation Day on the 14th April, you are still able to enrol in the Program for the upcoming terms.

But as places are limited and the program is run on a termly basis, do make sure you register for a spot as soon as possible.

About the Program:

The String Program is a short course designed for students to have a jumpstart learning experience to one of four stringed instruments, the violin, viola, cello or the double bass.

Choose either the Violin, Viola, Cello or Double Bass

Students will choose one of these four instruments to learn for a period of two terms, in which they will learn the fundamental basics of playing the instrument in a group setting.

Classes will be conducted in groups of 2 to 4 students per class according to their instrument of choice.

Not only will they collaborate with other students in their group class, but during the term they will collaborate with all the stringed instruments together as they prepare for an exciting performance at our school concerts!

All materials and even the instrument will be included in the tuition so you don’t even have to worry about getting yourself an instrument.

Recommended age group: 6 to 12 years old

Tuition Fee:

$30 per student for a 45 minute weekly lesson. Program will run per term for a period of two terms. Fee is inclusive of instrument and all learning materials.

Time and Day of Classes:

Students will have their group lessons according to their respective teacher’s schedule. Combined stringed classes will be held on Saturday afternoons.

Music App Reviews

Bass Cat and Treble Cat are fabulous educational games appropriate for students of all ages.

Bass Cat is aimed at teaching individuals how to read bass clef and developing their reading ability up to an advanced level. Treble Cat is essentially identical except it focuses on the treble clef. Amazingly, the games cater for a very broad age range. So, while appropriate for young children, they may also be used with adult learners.

Each game consists of 5 musical stages with 10 levels that progressively build upon each other. The aim of each level is to correctly identify the notes that are sliding along a musical staff before they reach its end. As an added incentive you are given a 1-3 star rating at the end of each level with each mistake you costing you a star. The game also includes a practice and challenge mode for those wanting to extend their skills even further.

In Treble Cat you will start off learning how to recognise middle C and then progress up by steps. This is another feature that I personally am less keen on because as a flautist middle C is a really hard note and it would be more relevant for it to commence on A or B. However, you should check with your instrumental teacher because the ‘easy’ notes vary from instrument to instrument. Bass Cat starts off on the second A below middle C and likewise progresses upwards by step. The games also force you to play through each level sequentially ensuring you have a solid foundation before diving into the more challenging levels.

Unfortunately, these games don’t come with multiple users but they are great for use on your personal iPad/iPod/iPhone/Android device. This however limits a teacher’s ability to use there copy with multiple different students.

Another limitation with the two games is that they don’t incorporate ledger lines but hopefully you will have mastered note reading before you need to venture into the dreaded realm of ledger lines.

My favourite feature of these games is actually the background music. Each level has a different song accompanying them and each piece is nowhere near as irritating as it could be. One even includes a digeridoo. They have also provided the ability to mute the audio.

The games are available in both ‘lite’ and full versions. The main difference being the full version has no advertisements and access to more features but they only cost a few dollars each.

One final note: each level only lasts for 60 seconds so they are perfect to play while you’re waiting for your lesson or waiting for your parents while they going through the check out. Happy Gaming!
